The Final Countdown

Hi All!
It's been a whirlwind of a week getting everything ready for next week's grand opening. The racks have been hung, the lookbook has been shot and more vintage has been sourced! Even though I've been constantly busy the past little while, I am so happy to be doing this. Every day brings something new and each new task is so rewarding (well maybe except the heavy lifting or constant garment steaming). I just can't even believe that in a weeks time I'll be meeting customers and sharing what I've been putting together.  I'll have lookbook teasers for you until the Sneak Peek Friday May 10th (7-9 pm). After that, we'll be open regular hours starting Saturday May 11th! Check it:

Spring Shots (Sneak Peek)

Today we shot the Spring Lookbook that will debut at the shop's grand opening! It was an amazing day with a beautiful team of women. There's nothing I love more than styling shoots and having friends there makes the day that much better!

A huge thank you to my lovely photographer, Heather Manning, who never ceases to amaze with her warm and bubbly personality and trained eye that always ends in those wow shots! Ever since I first saw her work a few years ago, I've been waiting to work with her and I was so lucky to finally get my chance!

On hair and makeup, my longtime friend and collaborator, Ms Christina Spina, is probably the sweetest girl I know and always brings such a calm and cool demeanor to every shoot that helps relax my anxious little heart. She always gets what I'm going for and is such a pleasure to work with.

I also had some amazing help from my new friends, Amanda Cordero and Trisha Topalopoulos. I met both these girls at the Vintage Marketplace a few weeks ago and I truly believe fate brought them to me. Amanda was so helpful with getting the location set up and helping me brainstorm the past week or so. Trish is my styling partner-in-crime, and knows how to accessorize the outfits I put together like no other! So happy to have met these two talented ladies and work on many more projects in the future.

Finally, Imogen and Lindsay from Spot6 were my beautiful and patient models. We asked a lot of them to trek up a bazillion stairs in high heels, and try and look glamorous amid layers of dust and debris. They are both so good at what they do and I see wonderful things in both of their futures.

Can't wait to show you all the final product! Stay tuned...

Thanks to Heather for posting this on her Instagram!

Sally sells sandals by the seashore

I've been in love with saltwater sandals for a while now, and once the warm weather hits they never leave my feet. So comfy and classic- I have them in pink and navy. Excited to announce that we will be carrying them this summer! I'll have white, red, navy, pink and tan so start picking out your favourite! Here's me in my baby pinks:

Sunnies

So after buying some amazing sunnies at the Vintage Marketplace this weekend I was inspired to order some vintage-style shades for the shop. Check out three of the styles that I'll be stocking in the coming months. Nothing like a fresh pair of sunglasses to make an outfit!

Hairspiration: SS13 Lookbook

Compiling some inspirations for the Spring Summer lookbook to be shot before the grand opening on May 11th. Loving the 40's/50's hair styles.

snail mail

excited to receive some fine notecards and postcard sets from the Black Apple. Keep an eye out for them when the shop opens (May 11th!) and make this the summer where you finally send out those snail mails you've been meaning to. Nothing says "i love you" like a beautiful postcard just because!

location, location, location

Well it's official...the shop's storefront has been found! It was a long, time-consuming search but the final location will be totally worth it. Don't want to give too much away...but let's just say by the time spring has fully hit, Girl on the Wing will be opening it's doors and helping you put together a whole new wardrobe! Stay tuned for updates, photos and musings. Now...off to the new and exciting world of renovations! Wish me luck.

walk the line

Today has been spent compiling inspirations for Girl on the Wing's Spring/Summer 13 vintage collection lookbook. While stylist Nicole Walker doesn't work with only vintage, her images have such a timeless, yet quirky feel to them. Had to share some of my favourite portraits that she's styled. Love that each one is so simple and topped off with a statement accessory (mouse included!).

forever young

In honour of Oscar week, I've been compiling images of my favourite Old-Hollywood movie stars. Today's style icon is Loretta Young, who won her academy award for Best Actress 65 years ago in 1948. I am in love with her playful style on and off screen. Check out some of her best costumes (harlequin clown!) and off-set outfits (hello valentine outfit...could have mistake her for Marion Cotillard).

bringing up baby

The Academy Awards are up this Sunday and old-hollywood is on my mind. I've been especially inspired by Katherine Hepburn's flawless style, especially during her rise to fame in the 1930's and 40's.  That woman could wear a ballgown or mens-inspired trousers and look amazing! Check out some of her best looks below.

the perfect patch

I currently have a beautiful vintage couch sitting in my parent's garage that needs to be recovered. While brainstorming ideas I came across these beautiful patchwork pieces. It might be an overly-ambitious DIY project...but a girl can dream! I love the way they bridge two of my favourite aesthetics- romantic and country.

sunny days

I don't know about you guys, but the sun has been shining lately and it's making me forget the frigid weather outside. Spring is on my mind and while we still have a bit more cold to endure, we're getting there, slowly but surely. Nothing says spring like a fresh pair of sunnies, and Karen Walker's new campaign featuring grannies from Advanced Style, put a huge smile on my face. Known for her unique designs and quirky aesthetic, this kiwi-designer focuses on making sunglasses that are modern with a classic, vintage feel. Would love to one day carry her stuff in the shop...but in the meantime, we'll be on the lookout for retro sunnies to add to the collection.

marry me, marimekko!

I've always loved the fun and bright prints of Finnish company Marimekko. Tonight I'm headed to the Textile Museum's Marimekko, With Love  exhibit and can't wait to see the fabrics up close. The company has been around since the 50's so I'm expecting an amazing retrospective. While they're most known for their textiles, I've always been most partial to their housewares. Last summer I travelled throughout Scandinavia and picked up lots of printed retro goodies for the shop- can't wait to share them with you all!

alice+olivia: ladies of the manor

Loving these shots from the Fall 2013 Alice + Olivia lookbook. The collection focuses on black and white and red all over. Especially loving these looks for a candelabra-lit valentines dinner, and maybe if I'm lucky my valentine will treat me to that amazing zebra purse! Bisous!

lookbook lady

A few years ago when this idea for Girl on the Wing started, I got together with some amazingly talented and creative girls and shot some pieces from my collection. Here are some of the images, shot by Allysandra Cervantes, makeup and hair by the lovely Christina Spina, lookbook design and layout by the magnificent Nicola Hamilton, and styling by myself, Whitney McMeekin. Model Alyssa Winegarden was the perfect mix of femininity and glamour. Enjoy!
